Giordano Bruno (1548 – 1600) is at once significant and enigmatic; a 16th-century Wittgenstein whose far-reaching interests and passionate investment in his subject matter carried him far beyond his contemporaries conceptually. By the same token, his commitment to what he considered valid, and his inability to read the room, led him into continuous conflict with his peers, and ultimately spelled his end.

About this book:

Giordano Bruno (1548 – 1600) is at once significant and enigmatic; a 16th-century Wittgenstein whose far-reaching interests and passionate investment in his subject matter carried him far beyond his contemporaries conceptually. By the same token, his commitment to what he considered valid, and his inability to read the room, led him into continuous conflict with his peers, and ultimately spelled his end.

Our edition is focused on his magical literature, and is a new translation based on the Tocco and Vitelli research:

  • Lampas Triginta Statuarum
  • De Magia Mathematica
  • De Magia Naturali
  • Theses De Magia
  • De Rerum Principiis et Elementis et Causis
  • De Vinculis in Genere

Giordano Bruno is more often spoken of than actually read. While his work has been translated and published, and very widely discussed, much of that material is out of print, or accessible only in scarce academic publications. And yet he casts a literal shadow across the subject; his monument in the Campo de’ Fiori has become an icon of philosophical, and especially esoteric, free thought.

We hope our new translation of Giordano’s Latin magical texts will make him more accessible to a general readership, and as with all our projects, stimulate our reader’s interest and imagination in the field as a whole.

Giodano Bruno is a iconic figure in the history of Esoteric thought. His is an enigmatic example for standing up for your beliefs at all costs. His works and ultimate sacrifice are so deserving of this exquisite volume. At over 400 pages it encompasses six essays by Bruno which outline his philosophy of magic. It is less a grimoire of magical operations than a treatise on his thoughts and concepts of magic.
The book's construction is impeccable, as is expected with so many Black Letter Press publications. The cover is in red Imitlin that is nearly fabric-like to the touch. The spine is beautifully decorated with a gold gilt title and two of Bruno's drawings "Prometheus Serpent" and "Theuti Radius" sigil. Which display handsomely on the shelf.
Bold black end pages, a detailed index and several blank pages at the end for copious notes, if you are so daring.

Black Letter Press seems to have a habit of bringing forward texts that might otherwise be forgotten and giving them the best attention possible. Natural Magick, Red Dragon, and now De Magia. Paul Summers Young's ability to bring an old book to become more accessible to the public through his form of translation is quite nice. He keeps the charm of the previous text while keeping the feel of something worth picking up. I did not even know how much I was going to enjoy this, but now I can say this is a forgotten classic among the old esoteric texts.

Wish all of GIORDANO BRUNO's books were up to this standard. The gold and black color scheme on the red cover with the intricate design really sets this copy apart for the hoi polloi. My only wish was to have gotten it sooner to snag up a first edition. I'm happy to have gotten this second printing though.
