The Book of Q’ab iTz is part of a series of books that Atramentous Press will be producing on the subject of the Dragon’s Column, this being the cohort who contributed towards the work that eventually became The Dragon Book of Essex by A. D. Chumbley. It is in light of this that The Book of Q’ab iTz should be considered as having both a talismanic and telesmatic application.

The Book of Q’ab iTz appears as the vessel for the sorcerer, for contained within is the evidence of a practitioner who has dedicated the past few years to the arte magical. It is in light of this quite exquisite emanation that Atramentous Press is very proud to announce the publication of David Herrerias’ first work. As an artist and practitioner of the crooked path he has emerged as a contemporary mystic. With a similar style to Austin Osman Spare and Andrew Chumbley, The Book of Q’ab iTz will surely be regarded as the most revered enchiridion for the dreaming Self.

Emerging as a record of his work, this being based on Andrew Chumbley’s Dragon Book of Essex, Qutub and Azoetia, as well as the work of Spare such as The Zoetic Grimoire of Zos and The Book of Pleasure, it places this particular book at the pinnacle of contemporary artistic spirit-possessed expressionism. Yet this offers something more to the reader. By manifesting only part of a greater living spiritual interaction with daemons and familiars, Herrerias manages to produce an evolved emanation of these previous masters. Combining his Mexican cultural background with the western occultism, The Book of Q’ab iTz presents an opportunity to engage with a pantheon of tricksters, familiars, Gods and Goddesses through the dream state. And while it acknowledges the influence of others, it is not a simple reflection of the past, but rather marks the evolution of the mysteries based on individual endeavour.

All things must return to the vessel so that they can be sacrificed in the mid-winter light. The Book of Q’ab iTz marks a new chapter in crooked path sorcery. With over sixty pieces of artwork as well as the written workings and insights from David Herrerias, this book should appeal to all those who are interested in understanding the power of the oneiric experience and the ophidian current, as encapsulated by Chumbley’s Dragon Book of Essex. This is after all a truly unique expression of a work which is happening Now. To be perfectly frank, there are few who have shown the capacity of being able to capture the spirit, yet through word, deed and art The Book of Q’ab iTz has accomplished this with distinct aplomb.

4/5

More of a 3.5/5 for me; I enjoyed the illustrations and artwork, and believe they alone are worth getting this book for. There's just something about the artwork that arises from Crooked Path Sorcery that draws me in and I've revisited this work from time to time just to admire the artwork.

Certain specifics about the practice (timing/date-wise) feel slightly opaque and could use a little bit of fleshing out - or maybe the specifics are just on the denser side and I need to write them down and transpose them into a calendar to see how the journey would function from a logistics standpoint.

Either way, I've been a fan of Atramentous Press' offerings ever since acquiring the codex althaeban malik and this is certainly one that a fan of that publisher should get to round out their library. The author's journey presented here, based on workings over a few years, has been inspirational and something I'd like to adapt to my own practice.

If the author ever did a follow-up to this work (the text of which left me wanting more as it had captivated me) and dived into more detail through expositions, would be an instant buy for me.

This paperback version produced by Atramentous Press is of the highest quality, made from superior materials that allow the wonderful artwork contained within this enchiridion to present as deserved.

The book reads somewhat like a chronicle of the artist's working of Chumbley's Dragon Book of Essex over the course of three years. Some of the black-ink illustrations are very reminiscent of Chumbley's / Spare's style. Perhaps most striking here is the range of Herrerias' abilities: everything from black-and-white photography, pencil/charcoal sketches to elaborate watercolors adorned with sigils and workings of the Sabbatic Alphabet reinforce Herreria to be among the upper tier of contemporary occult visionaries. Devotees of crooked path sorcery and oneiric explorations will find much to inspire to within these pages.
